Anthony Thieme (American 1888-1954)
Anthony Thieme was born in Holland, and emigrated from there to live in the United States in the 1920s. He studied art at the Royal Academy of Art in Holland, and also in Italy and Germany.In the United States he primarily lived in Rockport, Massachusetts, but he spent many winters in St. Augustine, Palm Beach and visited other towns in Florida as well. Thieme was a member of the American Watercolor Society, Salmagundi Club, Connecticut Association of Fine Art, the Boston Art Club, Providence Watercolor Club, North Shore Art Association, Springfield Art League, Rockport Art Association, Philadelphia Art Alliance, etc. He exhibited at the National Academy of Design, Art Institute of Chicago, Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, Salmagundi Club, Gloucester Art Association and other prestigious venues where he won numerous prizes. He also won awards at exhibitions in St. Augustine, Florida, in 1949 and in Miami, Florida, in 1949. His paintings were shown in Palm Beach at the Thieme Galleries, but he also showed at other galleries such as “Flair of Palm Beach Galleries.The St. Johns River near St. Augustine, Florida was a favorite subject of Thieme’s, and as he was a master of capturing the play of light on the Florida waterway, those paintings are a superb example of his art. Thieme also painted scenes of Palm Beach which are quite spectacular as well. Thieme’s work can be found in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Boston Museum of Fine Art, Montclair Art Museum, New Britain Museum of Art, and many other collections, both public and private."St. Johns River, Florida"
